Before I get alot of emails about this. I know it's not a subway tunnel entrance. It just seems that, that is the most popular urban legend about it. This entrance is in front of Clintonville Electric on High Street. I've had alot of people tell me it was a failed subway entrance or that it was the entrance to a failed underground parking lot. Turns out the truth is more mundane than fiction. This is/was a school across the street. This tunnel was built so school children wouldn't have to cross a busy road every day. Somehow the logic of school children + dark tunnel was lost on the powers that be. I agree, it sounds like the perfect hunting ground for perverts, muggers, hookers, and drug dealers.

I've heard from some people that say they used the tunnel in the late 80's & early 90's and other that said it was still in use as late as 1995. Somebody also said that it was used as city storage now. Most of the time it's locked up, so that probably gives more of an air of mystery. I happened to stop by Clintonville Electric about a week ago to shop for a new dishwasher. No luck on the dishwasher, but the entrance was unlocked.

I did not go down, because I didn't know if I would cross paths with angry city workers or end up down there and have somebody come by to lock up the gate at the end of the day.
